It was around this time last year when the media started to become fully aware of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden becoming a serious item in the world of Hollywood.
And now Joel Madden has took time to speak about his relationship with Nicole Richie ..
Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte's Joel Madden may have had a child together, but don't expect them to work together musically.
Madden wrote songs for previous girlfriend Hilary Duff and Richie has been planning an album for the last five years, but Madden won't be involved.
"From day one even as our relationship was finding its own path, we've always said we'll never work together," Madden says. "We've never done a red carpet together, we don't do photo shoots together. The only thing we do together publicly is our charity."
The pair started the Richie/Madden Children's Foundation after becoming parents to daughter Harlow in January this year. They've ploughed money made from selling baby photos to magazines into the charity and have travelled the world for UNICEF.
It's one of the many ways Madden says fatherhood has changed him.
"It's the best thing that ever happened to me," he says. "Pretty much everything everyone says about it, that's the way it is."
Much was written about how the clean-living rock star tamed the wild Nicole Richie, who had a string of drug and drink-driving charges to her name.
Joel Madden says Lionel Richie's daughter has been as much as an influence on him.
"She is the most unpretentious, down-to-earth, accepting person," Madden says. "I think it comes from her childhood of growing up with a super-famous dad. She grew up around Michael Jackson, Prince . . . all these great musicians.
"It's hard to impress her in the sense of money or fame. She's more impressed by who you are as a person. That's how she judges a person's worth.
"She's an open-minded cool person. She's taken a beating from the world for so long that it's given her a really thick skin. She's got my back. Whether the music was all gone, she's there for me and that's great for me to know."
Joel Madden also chats about his musical career with Good Charlotte.
He then also speaks about the paparazzi ..
The placid Madden's even learnt to cope with the paparazzi who stalk his family daily.
"We avoid it as much as possible. When we can't we keep it low key. There were 15 or 20 photographers after us the other day, so I asked them to give us some space. We try to work around it. You have good and bad days.
"The only way to avoid it would be moving out of LA, and neither one of us is ready to do that just yet.
"We know the options, so you can't really complain about it."
So i guess that means Nicole Richie and Joel Madden will not be moving out of Los Angeles!
I think its great to hear Joel Madden chat about Nicole Richie - it gives us a real insight into Nicole Richie. Nicole's real fans know she is a great and funny person but the media does love to portray Nicole Richie as a skinny, party, designer label lover, self centred Beverly Hills 'rich kid'.
