When it comes to fashion, Nicole Richie has never been shy about making bold choices. That’s why FLARE’s fashion director, Elizabeth Cabral, knew Nicole would love the statement-making bright colours and glimmering modern metallics that are two of spring’s hottest trends. “She has an appreciation for style and what is trending,” says Cabral. “She knows what she likes and what works on her.” One big hit: our cover look, a gold-sequined Roberto Cavalli jacket and skirt, which worked perfectly with Nicole’s famous personal style, epitomized by her fashion lines, House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate. Nicole’s four-year-old daughter, Harlow Winter Kate (after whom the line was named), and two-year-old son, Sparrow James Midnight, joined FLARE on set. During the shoot, Nicole even consulted with Harlow for style approval. Clearly great taste runs in the family.

On the business of fashion: “In other areas of entertainment, it’s very easy to just be the artist—to sing a song or play a role and then let someone else deal with the business side of it. But in the fashion industry, you have to think about your line sheets, production, fabrics, and make sure you’re shipping on time—that’s what makes your brand. You really have to be an artist and a business person at the same time.”

On her four-year-old daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden: “She has no idea that she has two lines named after her—I try and let her be a kid.”

On her best piece of advice: “Just sit in a room and figure out who you want to be, where you want to go in this world, and what’s going to make you stand out and be different.”

On being considered a role model: “I know that, being in the public eye, I have a responsibility to the people who have been supporting my dreams. But more than that, I know that I have a responsibility to my family.”

You can see Nicole Richie's entire editorial with Flare magazine on March 12th when the issue hits newsstands.
